A new copyright law could be on the way to the Senate.
The Senate is expected to vote on the bill next week.
The bill would make it illegal to distribute or sell any media without the express permission of the copyright holder.
It’s one of a number of changes to copyright laws in Canada that will be voted on at the same time.
“This is one of those bills that really does bring the whole of Canada together and to get people talking about copyright reform,” said Paul Martin, director of communications at Public Knowledge.
Public Knowledge says the legislation would effectively criminalize access to news websites. “
It’s a good start, but there are some real thorny issues in the legislation.”
Public Knowledge says the legislation would effectively criminalize access to news websites.
“The bill would give copyright holders unprecedented new powers to seize content without notice,” said Martin.
“We’ve had legislation that says it’s okay for the public to access copyrighted material online, but it’s not okay to copy it or make it available on other websites.
It would not be allowed to be used for any purpose. “
In this case, the right to access copyright material would be totally taken away.
This would make them much more likely to take people down.” “
Under the bill, copyright holders would be able to take down a website without even the slightest hesitation, or even a notification.
This would make them much more likely to take people down.”
The bill was introduced in the House of Commons in March, but has yet to pass the Senate where it will be debated this week.
“I’m pleased that the Senate is moving forward with this,” said Senator Mike Duffy, who is also a critic of the bill.
“But it’s going to be really interesting to see what happens at the end of the day.
I’m looking forward to having a look at what they have in mind.”
Martin said it’s also important to look at the impact on the news industry.
“With the way that these bills have been drafted, we’re looking at a very broad swath of content,” he said.
“Those are the kinds of things that could be under threat. “
So we’ll be watching carefully what happens.””
